Tsunami: The Sea Scout Ship That

Makes Its Own Waves

Our Ship

Preparing Today's Youth Since 2005

Since 1912, Sea Scouts has offered young people the chance to grow through adventure, responsibility, and life on the water. What began as a program within the Boy Scouts of America, the Sea Scouts program has grown into the largest and longest-running youth boating organization in the country.

In 2005, Ship 678 — Tsunami — launched in the Cascade Pacific Council with twelve newly minted Eagle Scouts from Troop 442. What started as an ambitious vision quickly became a powerhouse of maritime excellence, leadership, and teamwork.

In 2011, Tsunami earned national recognition as the National Flagship — an honor not awarded to a Northwest Sea Scout unit since 1936. Our ship proudly continued serving in the National Flagship Fleet for three additional years, setting a standard of excellence that still guides us today.

Now, as we move forward under Scouting America, SSS Tsunami remains committed to delivering a high-quality program focused on maritime skills, leadership development, teamwork, and personal growth. Our scouts don’t just learn how to sail — they learn how to lead, how to problem-solve, and how to work together toward a common goal.

For over twenty years, Ship Tsunami has been more than a Sea Scout ship — it’s been a place where boys grow into men of integrity, confidence, and courage. The waters of the Columbia River and beyond have shaped countless young lives, and we’re just getting started.

What We Do & Why It Matters

Adventure While Learning Valuable Skills For The Future

At Sea Scout Ship Tsunami, our scouts learn hands-on maritime skills including navigation, boat handling, rope work, safety, and rescue techniques. They build real leadership and teamwork abilities as they take charge of the program under adult mentorship. Through local outings, extended cruises, and special events, scouts enjoy meaningful adventure while forming lifelong friendships.

No prior boating experience is necessary — just curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a spirit of adventure.

Sea Scouts isn’t just about boats. It’s about equipping our scouts with essential life skills that reach far beyond the water: leadership under pressure, confidence, problem-solving, real responsibility, and strong character.
